What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is the condition of feeling off-balance. The person may feel dizzy or as the world around them is spinning. This is generally caused due to inner ear problem. Vertigo is also associated with head or neck injuries, tumour and migraine headaches.
Vertigo is of two types-peripheral and central
- Peripheral vertigo: Being the common type of vertigo, this happens when there is an issue with the persons inner ear or with the nerve helps with the sense of balance.
- Central vertigo: Although less common, it occurs when a condition affects the brain such as infection, stroke or brain injury.
Diagnostic Tests
For the diagnosis of vertigo, different types of tests are conducted which include,
- Fukuda-Unterberger test: The doctor asks the person to walk in a place for 30seconds with closed eyes. If the person leans to a side, it indicates the person has an issue with the inner ear.
- Romberg’s test: As a part of this test, the doctor asks the person to close the eyes, stand with the feet together with arms to the side. If the person feels unsteady, it indicates an issue with the CNS-Central Nervous System.
- Head Impulse test: Here, the person is asked to keep their eyes on a fixed target and then the doctor moves his/her eyes side-to-side. While doing this close attention is paid to the eye movement of the patient to determine is there is an issue with the inner ear.
- Apart from this, CT scans and MRI can be relayed on.

Vertigo Treatment
Various treatments for Vertigo can be opted for based on the underlying cause.
- Repositioning maneuvers: The treatment is given when a person has BPPV-when calcium carbonate crystals move from the inner ear to semicircular canals. This helps in moving these crystals from the canals back to the utricle of inner ear.
- Medications: Motion sickness medicines can be given to bring down the symptoms of vertigo.
- Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy: This involves a list of exercises which can improve the symptoms of vertigo. This includes stretching, eye movement control etc.
- Surgery: In rare cases, when people have serious issues such as brain tumour or neck injury a surgery can be recommended.
